About

Hello!
My name is John Segui (he/him). I'm a Registered Social Worker in British Columbia and Ontario. As a gay first-generation Filipino-Canadian, my lived experience has truly shaped my relationship with mental health. Growing up in an Asian household, my mental health, even more so my sexuality, was not something openly talked about. A large part of it is the stigma because, as I see it, mental health issues transcend race and ethnicity. Stress, anxiety, depression, exploring one's sexual orientation and gender identity, and relationship problems are issues that happen to most of us, regardless of where one comes from.
I have been in the helping profession working since 2016. As a counselor, I am deeply passionate about working with children and youth, 2SLGBTQ+, and racialized individuals in a holistic, culturally, and 2SLGBTQ+-affirmed approach. I have received my Bachelor of Social Work at the University of British Columbia, specializing in Child Welfare. I have also received my Master's of Social Work at the University of Toronto, specializing in the mental health of youth, 2SLGBTQ+, and immigrant populations.
My practice comes from a wide range of therapy modalities, including 2SLGBTQ+ affirming therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), emotion-focused therapy (EFT), attachment-based therapy, Gottman (Level 1 & 2), and motivational interviewing (MI).
In my practice, I help my clients experiencing anxiety, depression, family-based conflict, relationship conflict, confusion about one’s gender identity and sexual orientation, suicidality, self-harm, substance use, self-esteem, boundary issues, people-pleasing, and trauma.
Being able to help others on their mental health journey is truly an honour and privilege. As you step into therapy, your trust is something I always strive to foster and nurture. Through this foundation of trust, I create a space where we can navigate through the hardships in life that are inherently part of the human experience and that one doesn't need to go through alone. I'll be here supporting you in every step of the way.
Salamat (Thank you in Tagalog),
John
